On 8/24/2020 lay Buddhist teacher Dassana left human birth and died this morning at 7:10 AM in Malaysia (local time) at the age of 58. The cause of his death was internal organ failure caused by a serious infectious disease, the symptoms of which had been registered by Brother Dassana only a few weeks earlier. Dassan’s health subsequently began to deteriorate so rapidly that he fell completely unconscious a few days ago. He was hospitalized in a hospital in Kuala Lumpur, but the treating doctors gave minimal hope from the beginning. The monks bhante Gavesi and bhante Jotinanda alternated with him all the time. According to those present, Dassan’s expression was calm throughout and gave the impression of meditating.
Brother Dassana was an eminent teacher of Vipassana meditation. He spent approximately 17 years in monastic robes (he then used the monastic name as a layman) and among his most important teachers was Bhate Sujiva. He had deep meditation experience both in the Burmese Vipassana tradition and in other Theravada meditation directions. He regularly led courses in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, where he had many students and friends. He excelled in his sensitive and compassionate approach with an emphasis on traditional teaching methods, which he was able to convey with an understanding of the European way of thinking. This is an irreplaceable loss not only for the Czech Theravada community. Teachers of Dassan’s stature are becoming fewer and fewer these days, and with each passing away, the sincere transmission of the Dhamma in its purest form is disappearing from the world.
